The Spaniard is now in his 30s, and the competition with Dean Henderson, which he is currently winning, has done him the world of good, but it remains to be seen if he still is the long-term solution to the role at Old Trafford.
We say this because Manchester United have been touted as potentially making a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma in the future, even with the Italian swapping Milan for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
Despite being only a few months into his stay, the French adventure isn’t really going well for the Euro 2020 hero, as he is spending more time on the bench than anticipated.
This has led to rumours that Mino Raiola could swiftly move him away from the club to get his client the game time he requires, and a handful of clubs, who were interested in the past, could be willing bidders.
Manchester United, according to Calciomercato.it, are among those, and ‘it cannot be excluded’ that they, alongside the competition, ‘may take advantage of the situation’ to put him between their sticks.
They go through the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea before finishing off with Manchester United, where they point out De Gea ‘is not exempt from criticism due to some uncertainties’.
Thus, Donnarumma, with the Red Devils, ‘would have the possibility to replace him by giving more safety’ to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
We’ll monitor this going forward, but if Donnarumma continues to live in Keylor Navas’ shadows at the Parc des Princes, this could start to grow into something more concrete.
