Donny van de Beek won’t be given another chance to impress at Manchester United after letting Erik ten Hag down ‘tremendously’ in the defeat to Aston Villa.
That’s according to analyst Johan Derksen, who says the midfielder’s latest poor display is likely to have put an end to his Manchester United career.
The Dutchman has continued to struggle at Old Trafford this season, with the arrival of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen only pushing him further down the pecking order.
It had been felt that the midfielder could revive his career at the club under Ten Hag, who he worked with at Ajax and had starred for under during their time together in the Netherlands.
That has not been the case, though, with Van de Beek continuing to play a bit part role in the squad under Ten Hag this season.
He was handed a starting role in the clash with Aston Villa at the weekend but put in another non-descript showing that saw him hauled off in the 65th minute as Manchester United were beaten 3-1.
That display did little to convince those watching he can turn his career with the club around and, as far as Derksen is concerned, it actually spelled the end of it.
“I was watching Aston Villa – Manchester United and then Erik ten Hag made a big mistake by putting Eriksen and Donny van de Beek in midfield together,” he told Vandaag Inside.
“Eriksen may have played a nice pass and done nothing else, but Donny van de Beek delivered a poor performance. He had no input whatsoever. He walked all over the pitch and was substituted.
“They went under because of players who can only do something with the ball.
“It’s over for van de Beek, who Ten Hag will never give another to chance now, because he has obviously let him down tremendously.”
