With Antonio Valencia playing some of the best football of his career under José Mourinho this season, stories about Manchester United looking for a right-back in January can be dismissed pretty easily.
However, with the Ecuador international now on the wrong side of 30 (he’ll be 32 in August), the future must be looked at, and Le10 Sport in France reckon the Red Devils have targeted Paris Saint-Germain’s Serge Aurier.
The French magazine, in their monthly publication, report that while no January transfer for the Ivorian is expected to take place, three clubs have approached the right-back’s entourage with a transfer for next summer in mind.
Le10 claim Manchester United, Barcelona and AC Milan have all spoken with Aurier’s representatives, and despite no bids existing, the interest is there, and it’s very serious.
One of the best right-backs in Europe on his day, Aurier would certainly be an asset to any team, yet his off the pitch problems remain a big question mark for potential suitors.
Periscope issues aside, there’s also the problem for Manchester United that Aurier isn’t actually allowed in the country as things stand.
That, of course, could change between now and next summer.
As well as Antonio Valencia, Manchester United have Matteo Darmian as a right back. Timothy Fosu-Mensah can also play there, as can Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and even Ashley Young.
