So here we go again. Manchester United and Victor Lindelof. We should have seen that coming.
According to the Portuguese press this morning, the Red Devils made a late attempt to try to sign the Swedish defender from Benfica.
Club president Luis Filipe Vieira was in England due to some other business, and as reported by A Bola and Record, got another offer from Manchester United for the 22-year-old.
As we all know, he can’t really turn down the payment of a release clause, as that’s something for the player to do. That’s why the story seems even more strange.
Are we buying this? Probably not. After talking to Benfica for months, a late attempt like this really sounds like something Manchester United would do in 2013, with David Moyes and a recently appointed Ed Woodward in charge.
But José Mourinho had already said there would be no new signings, and considering that no defenders left the club this month, he was probably telling the truth. Unless Manchester United tried to surprise Benfica by showing them cash on the last day of the market, it doesn’t seem like a well put together plan.
The Lindelof to Manchester United rumours aren’t going anywhere, and now the focus will be the summer transfer window.
