There’s no denying that David De Gea’s performance for Manchester United against Brentford was nothing short of disastrous.

The Spaniard immediately took the blame for the entire loss, making it clear that if he hadn’t fumbled the ball for the first goal, the scoreline might have been different.

While that was extremely noble of him, it doesn’t take away from the fact that his performances have dwindled over the years, and while he can be an excellent shot stopper, the rest of his game isn’t up to scratch.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the decision to let Dean Henderson go out on loan to Nottingham Forest for the season appears to have already backfired, as the goalkeeper was instrumental in helping the newly promoted side get their first three points of the season against West Ham United at the weekend.

That’s why seeing Manchester United linked with new goalkeepers shouldn’t really come as a surprise, with Blick in Switzerland claiming the Red Devils are ‘interested in Yann Sommer’.

This is reportedly something the club have ‘had internal discussions’ about, as the Old Trafford side are ‘looking for a new number two behind David De Gea’.

In fact, Blick go as far as suggesting that should Sommer be signed, ‘one would certainly trust’ him ‘to oust’ the Spaniard ‘in the medium term’.

The big question for the Borussia Mönchengladbach player is ‘would such a change with this risk make sense before the 2022 World Cup in November?’

There is also the option for Sommer to renew at the German side, where he has a new contract on offer for the next three years.

As things stand, his deal with Gladbach expires next year, making him a very appetising target for a number of clubs, but whether he would want to join the current mess that is Manchester United remains to be seen.
