Antonio Valencia’s contract at Manchester United will expire at the end of the season and it’s already been made clear he’s leaving.
Matteo Darmian could follow the Ecuadorian out of the club and if that happens, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have winger turned fullback Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot as the only two players in the right-back position.
It is clear that strengthening that position is key for the Red Devils in the summer and the 20-time English champions could turn their attention towards Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Meunier.
Napoli are interested in the Belgium international, according to claims from Italy last week. CalcioNapoli24 covered the rumour regarding their local club, but believed Manchester United to be in ‘pole position’.
The Red Devils have been scouting PSG recently, giving further weight to claims of interest.
Interestingly, Meunier has shed light about his contract talks at PSG during an interview with L’Avenir last week and expressed his admiration for the Premier League.
“Given the team’s deadlines, I can understand that my personal case has been put in the fridge, but since nothing has changed so far, the message seems clear enough. It would annoy me a bit that it ends like this without having the chance to finish in beauty.
“Yes, there is interest from England. But actually, a bit from everywhere. Also, from China and the Middle East. But I have never hidden my preference for the Premier League.”
He’s right, he hasn’t hidden it.
In 2017, the PSG player made no secret of his desire to play in English football and his support of the Old Trafford club: “I’ve always said that one day, I would like to play in the Premier League. I’m very happy in Paris and if I finish my career there, it won’t be a disappointment, far from it. But, if one day, I had to leave Paris, why not?
“On the other side of the Channel, there are the stadiums, the fans, and I’ve never hidden that I’m a big fan of Manchester United, which remains, in my eyes, the real reference in the world of football.”
Last week, RMC Sport in France claimed that PSG are ‘already preparing the big manoeuvres for its summer transfer window’ which includes both incoming and outgoings in order to not breach the Financial Fair Play regulations.
In regards to the outgoings, Meunier, who is not the first choice right-back for Thomas Tuchel, got a mention. It’s claimed the right-back could be pushed towards the exit door, provided the club receives an offer of €30m.
Even L’Equipe have joined RMC Sport to claim the Belgian and his teammate Layvin Kurzawa will not be retained and PSG are looking to raise a combined fee of €60m from the duo’s sales.
Following that, Meunier was left out of the match-day squad as PSG lost the Coup de France final to Rennes on penalties.
Monday’s edition of L’Equipe has a very small sentence on the player, making it clear he can go this summer.
If Manchester United truly want this signing, then it seems it shouldn’t be too difficult to do.
