Manchester United are today pointed out as one of the potential destinations for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the next summer.
That’s a story brought by Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, who claims agent Jorge Mendes has promised the Dragons a ‘new jackpot’ in 2023.
It’s said the representative was approached by several clubs regarding Costa this summer, and both he and Porto decided it’s better to let him go only next year, when he’ll reach a higher valuation in the market.
It turns out that when speaking of clubs who could sign the goalkeeper, Correio da Manhã names Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, pointing out that the contracts of Jan Oblak and David De Gea both expire at the end of the season.
According to the report, Jorge Mendes is confident about how big this deal would be.
Even though he can’t promise Costa’s €60m release clause will be triggered, he believes this will be the biggest sale of a goalkeeper in the Portuguese league, overcoming Ederson’s €40m transfer from Benfica to Manchester City in 2017.
Since there’s a lot to happen until the next summer, we better wait and see if Manchester United will actually make a move for this one.
That should obviously depend on how De Gea’s season goes.
