It was only a matter of time before Manchester United were dragged into claims regarding Edinson Cavani’s future, and L’Equipe do the honours on Monday.

The Uruguayan striker has been increasingly out of the picture at PSG since the arrival of Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan.

Diego Simeone very much wants him at Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish side running out of patience with the fitness and form of Diego Costa. In order to sign him during January, Atletico need to get at least one player off their wage bill, and that’s something the Rojiblancos have been working to do.

Atletico are yet to make an offer, which leads L’Equipe to suggest a move next summer could be the eventual outcome.

Cavani’s contract expires at the end of June, so there’s a potential free transfer there for clubs to move for.

The French newspaper states Manchester United and Chelsea have ‘positioned themselves’ for the player, specifically on a summer basis. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are ‘making eyes’ at Cavani, whilst Chelsea are just thrown in with even less said.

Cavani turns 33 years of age in February, so the signing wouldn’t really fit with what Solskjaer has been trying to build at Old Trafford.

There’s every chance the Premier League clubs have just been thrown in for some added drama.
