Even before Manchester United were anointed as one of the Founding Fathers of the European Super League, they were interested in bolstering their defence.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has yet to find the ideal partner for Harry Maguire, whom the Red Devils spent close to £80m on, and neither Victor Lindelöf nor Eric Bailly seem to fit the bill.

While it’s easy to forget that Phil Jones is also a Manchester United player, he is also not suitable for the task, meaning a new player must come in.

Among the big names often sent to Old Trafford, the one that has stuck the most in recent weeks is that of Raphaël Varane, currently contracted to Real Madrid.

The France international’s contract in Spain runs out in 2022, and it’s been explained a few times that the La Liga club aren’t all that confident in him renewing.

This means a sale this summer (or at a push next January) would be the only way to avoid him leaving on a free, and that’s why Manchester United are circling.

In fact, Marca in Spain claim the Red Devils ‘want to sign’ and are ‘fixated’ on Varane, with ‘the offer to Real Madrid being around €50m’.

They add the player ‘has expressed his interest to play in the Premier League and thinks his brilliant step in the white club is now over’.

Arriving at the club in 2011, Varane will have spent 10 years at one of the biggest clubs in the world, with Marca stating that if he leaves, ‘he will leave a great memory of his professionalism and commitment’.
