Manchester United fan campaign over transfer isn’t all it seems

The situation between Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jose Mourinho will only become clear when one of them speaks about it. And even then, if the situation is negative, there’s likely to be different versions released over the next few dyears, to ‘shed light’ on who was really to blame.

It’s obviously big news in Germany and on Wednesday SportBild have reported on what they say is a campaign in support of the midfielder, to convince Mourinho that a transfer would be a very bad idea.

SportBild explain that Mourinho’s Instagram account has been bombarded with #SaveSchweinsteiger messages.

They’re right, but it doesn’t really tell the full story of social media reaction to the situation. Whilst on Instagram, the campaign to save Schweinsteiger may be in full swing, on Twitter the player has received a lot of criticism.

When Tobi Schweinsteiger, Bastian’s brother, tweeted the words ‘no respect’, he was instantly met with many, many replies showing no respect for his brother and encouraging him out of Manchester United.

SportBild are justified to call the Instagram messages a ‘fan protest’, but it’s only half the story. Manchester United support is split on this one.
