Under contract at Manchester United until 2018, Guillermo Varela is currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, but things aren’t exactly going well.

Injured in his second game with the Bundesliga side, the right-back had to undergo ankle surgery, which kept him out of action until recently.

Returning from the injury, the Manchester United loanee then complained the pain had returned, caused by a screw left over from the operation, and the player had to go under the knife again.

Unfortunately, it seems the screw hasn’t been removed, as Kicker on Thursday explain this could have ‘long-lasting implications’, and as things stand, there is ‘no precise indication how long the downtime will be’.

Armin Reutershahn, Frankfurt’s manager, explained the situation ‘remained a big puzzle’, and there was little confidence the player would return anytime soon.

Manchester United, and Varela, will have been hoping this loan would be the perfect opportunity to either prove he had what it takes to have a future at Old Trafford, or catch the eye of other clubs for a transfer in the summer.

As things stand, it remains to be seen if the player will even be fit enough for a move, as such pain could cause uncertainty during a medical, especially if there is no return date.
