Matthijs de Ligt’s father in law insists the defender has not regretted joining Juventus, labelling talk of a move to Manchester United as ‘just rumours’.
De Ligt was one of the big names of last summer, with all the big clubs in Europe chasing his signature.
Juventus ended up winning the race, securing his signature in a £77m move that many considered a coup.
His first year in Italy has not been a successful one, though, with him struggling to find his best form in Maurizio Sarri’s side.
That’s sparked rumours that they could look to sell him this summer, with it also felt the Italian side might use him to raise money following the Coronavirus outbreak.
Manchester United has been named as a possible destination, but his father in law has poured cold water on those rumours.
“It’s just rumours, that’s all, there’s nothing more to say about it,” he told Tuttojuve.
Those comments certainly suggest that, should United make a bid for De Ligt this summer, he wouldn’t be interested in the move.
Whether Manchester United were ever planning on doing so, though, is debatable at best. While most would argue they need another centre back this summer, there is also a case against it.
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf have formed a decent partnership in recent months, and United have more urgent needs than in that position at present.
There’s also Mino Raiola to consider. He’s publicly stated he won’t be sending his clients to Old Trafford in future and they’re not keen on him either, having suffered as a result of signing his clients in the past.
Those two factors alone made a move for De Ligt unlikely, and now the player has seemingly added another hurdle.
