Manchester United are ‘best placed’ to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres this summer, should he finally leave the Spanish side.

That’s according to AS, who say the player has ‘a lot of pull’ in England, but it is United who could win the race for his signature.

Torres has established himself as one of the best defenders in Spain during his time with Villarreal, with a series of impressive performances in the heart of their defence.

He had the option to leave the club for Tottenham last summer but elected to stay, a decision that worked out in his favour as he played a key role in them reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

That’s only helped his stock to grow, and there have been growing talks about a potential move to Manchester United.

Earlier this week, it was stated Erik ten Hag wants him at all costs, while before that it was claimed the defender would choose a move to Old Trafford over other options.

AS seemingly back that up, stating that the next few days and weeks could be ‘decisive’ for the defender’s future.

The idea of a move to the Premier League has been ‘gaining momentum’, but Torres’ intention is to only leave if an ‘irrefutable offer’ arrives from ‘one of the most prestigious clubs’ in England.

That is where Manchester United ‘come into the picture’ as they can match both of those demands, even if they’re not at the level they once were.

Indeed, according to the newspaper, they ‘seem to be the best placed’ to sign the Spaniard, although other big clubs cannot be ruled out at this stage.

Either way, the view on United’s chances of getting him is a positive one, should Ten Hag be as keen as has been suggested he is this week.
