Nuno Mendes’ family had a special moment on Friday. The 18 year old signed a new contract with Sporting, one which will change his life, and gathered with those closest to him in the club’s offices.

Portuguese newspaper Record reports there were tears from the youngster’s mother, and that ‘ten years of sacrifices’ finally paid off. A dream had come true, and the comfort of a good contract mixed with the excitement of what’s to come, creating the ‘dream’ scenario Record cover.

But signing a new Sporting contract doesn’t mean the left-back, who can also play in central defence, will be at the club for many years. With the Lisbon side in constant search of cash, it gives them security over getting more money, and, besides, Manchester United are already in town.

Mendes is represented by Miguel Pinho, the same agent who manages Bruno Fernandes’ career, and it’s been claimed multiple times that the youngster came up in negotiations for the midfielder.

Record state Manchester United ‘already’ have their eye on the player, and the same can be said for Real Madrid.

Mendes is now protected by a €45m release clause, although it’s likely he’ll go for less than that when the time comes. This isn’t a potential transfer for this summer, but rather something more long term, and one to keep an eye on.
