French striker Karim Benzema is extending his Real Madrid contract until June 2021, which says more about the long term planning at the Bernabéu than rewarding the striker for his current status.

Real Madrid have their squad on long contracts, with no worries about impending free transfers or stars being able to pressure the club. It’s a strong position to be in, and L’Equipe don’t think it’s been done out of chance.

That’s probably obvious, it’s simply a good business and football plan to have players committed for a few seasons, but L’Equipe believe a couple of clubs could be providing a specific worry.

Real Madrid are trying to ‘shield’ their workforce from wealthy clubs, explains L’Equipe, with PSG and Manchester City the two mentioned.

Manchester City had been repeatedly linked with Isco in recent years, but the Spanish international recently signed a new long contract himself. Even before that, it had always been Isco’s desire to succeed at Madrid, regardless of Manchester City interest, and once he became prominent an exit was unlikely.

Manchester City and PSG would now have a hard time poaching stars from Real Madrid, with the club also going for large release clauses.

L’Equipe probably like the idea of PSG making the biggest clubs worry, and throw Manchester City in for company.
