Manchester City ‘remain attentive’ to a possible deal for Sporting Clube de Portugal defender Nuno Mendes.
Mendes is one of the hottest prospects in European football at this moment in time, with a number of Europe’s big clubs thought to be keen on him.
Manchester City have been long linked with a move, with numerous reports over this summer indicating they are keen on the 19-year-old.
At one point, it appeared a move was closing in, but there was a sudden turnaround in those reports, with Manchester City seemingly pulling away from any deal.
A Bola cover that today and state that they ‘remain attentive’ to the left-back as Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain are ‘confessed admirers’ of him.
The newspaper explains that Sporting had very much been expecting a sale and even signed Rúben Vinagre from Wolves as a replacement.
However, a deal ‘fizzled out’ because Manchester City, who were his most ‘serious suitor’, were slow to move forward and make a deal happen.
They remain in the background, though, and with Guardiola and Begiristain keen admirers, it cannot be ‘excluded’ that City will return to the fore and try to get him.
That would presumably rest on whether they spend their money on a new striker and if the growing Cristiano Ronaldo rumours are anything more than that.
That remains to be seen, but the interest in Nunes is still there regardless of their failure to properly move for him this summer.
