On Sunday, The Daily Star had an exclusive claiming Pep Guardiola would be prepared to break the world record fee for goalkeeper by paying Ederson Moraes’ release clause.

It was claimed that Manchester City would spend £33m on the transfer, surpassing the £32.6m Juventus paid to Parma for the signing of Gianluigi Buffon sixteen years ago.

Although these types of claims are always picked up in Portugal, this one couldn’t be believed without some reservation. That’s because, as reported by Record, that’s not the player’s release clause.

Record explain that Ederson actually has a €60m release clause, which would be £51m at current exchange rates.

When Benfica renewed Ederson’s contract earlier this year, it was not officially announced that his release clause had been changed. So although the Portuguese newspaper take the new figure as a fact, other outlets may not have the same information.

We just hope Manchester City are aware of that. Maybe Guardiola was told the price by Ederson himself when they spoke on the phone last month.
