It’s now been six years since Bernardo Silva left Benfica. And the bigger the success he has in his career, the more his departure from the Eagles is recalled by the Portuguese media.
Just a few months ago, manager Jorge Jesus said the midfielder is ‘ungrateful’ given the way he talks about club president Luis Filipe Vieira. Then a friend of the coach accused the player of leaving the Lisbon side ‘for money’.
There was a little public war of words at the time, and we see something similar today, this time between Bernardo Silva and Renato Paiva.
The coach, who used to manage the midfielder at Benfica’s reserve squad, told Canal 11 the player ‘didn’t want to wait’ and was ‘didn’t want to have patience’ about his promotion to the first team.
That’s why Bernardo Silva took to Twitter on Sunday to go against these claims. Even though he didn’t want to make a personal attack towards Renato Paiva, he once again claimed the story isn’t true.
“A coach for whom I have a lot of respect and affection. But it doesn’t correspond to reality… the machine of discrediting those who go against the people from above remains stronger and stronger. After the ungrateful, the impatient arrived. I’m waiting for the next one.”
Bernardo Silva left Benfica for Monaco in January 2015 in a €15.75m deal. He stayed in France until 2017, when he signed for Manchester City for around €50m.
With one more controversy, the midfielder is once again getting many articles from Portuguese newspapers today, and will continue to do so until he finally plays for the Eagles’ first team again one day.
