Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that teammate Leroy Sane is closing in on a return from his long injury lay-off.

Sané has missed the start of this season after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the Community Shield win over Liverpool in August.

He has been missing ever since, having been forced to undergo surgery to fix the damage and then start the long process to recovery.

The belief was that he would miss the majority of this season, with it even suggested that his place in Germany’s squad for Euro 2020 was in jeopardy.

However, it seems the 23-year-old is making a swift recovery, at least if Manchester City teammate Gündogan is to be believed.

“He made a positive impression,” he told RTL.

“The good thing about him is that Leroy is now past the worst stage and will be able to return to the pitch in the next few weeks and play with the ball there soon after.

“So I hope he will be available to participate again in the middle of the second half of the season and also be available for the European Championship.”

That will undoubtedly come as positive news for Manchester City, who will be keen to have the forward back sooner rather than later as they attempt to hunt down Liverpool in the title race.

It will also come as positive news to Bayern Munich, who pursued Sané throughout the summer transfer window and were close to completing a move before his untimely injury.

This latest development is sure to add to the fuel that they will be returning with a bid in January, as opposed to next summer.
