Manchester City welcoming Liverpool to the Etihad was always likely to be one of the most high profile games so far this season. It didn’t disappoint in that respect, with coverage around Europe both before and after the match.

Sergio Aguero put Manchester City ahead, and then a challenge from Sadio Mane with Ederson for the ball was to prove the biggest talking point afterwards.

What had looked like a relatively straightforward decision and red card, despite Mane seemingly not intending to hurt his opponent, was turned into a huge debating point.

The largely unnecessary yet box-ticking chitter-chatter has threatened to take at least some of the limelight away from some great Manchester City performances, mainly Kevin de Bruyne.

The Belgian ran the show and is putting his undoubted talents to good use for the team, continually maturing into a consistently crucial member of Pep Guardiola’s side.

De Bruyne’s performance against Liverpool has been noted by Gazzetta dello Sport, who include him in their European Team of the Week. One of three Premier League players to make the eleven, De Bruyne continues to add to his reputation around Europe.
