Manchester City have made an effort to hijack Bayern Munich’s move for Florian Wirtz, making an official offer to Bayer Leverkusen.
That’s according to journalist Christian Falk, who reports that Manchester City want the midfielder to withdraw his commitment to Bayern.
Wirtz is the big summer target for the German champions, and the belief is that he had already committed to joining Vincent Kompany’s side. A deal is yet to be done between the two sides, though, and won’t be easy to get over the line.
Manchester City have long been named among his admirers in Germany, alongside Real Madrid, but it’s long been made clear that he would prefer Bayern Munich.
A recent report stated that he had told Xabi Alonso that he did not want to join Manchester City or Real Madrid, but Alonso later denied those claims, opening the door to the Etihad once again.
Falk now reports that Manchester City want to hijack Bayern’s deal for the 22-year-old and have made an offer to Leverkusen. They also want the star to withdraw his commitment to Bayern.
Pep Guardiola wants Wirtz as a successor to Kevin de Bruyne and it seems he and Manchester City are now working to try and get a deal done. Whether they are successful, or this is an attempt to push Bayern along, remains to be seen.
