David De Gea’s girlfriend has come in for much undeserved criticism from Manchester United supporters. Yes, she did unfavourably compare the city’s beauty to the back of a fridge, but also made efforts to backtrack from that.

In summer 2015, when De Gea clearly wanted to leave Manchester United and sign for Real Madrid, Edurne got a lot of stick for being the reason. As if De Gea himself was blissfully happy at Manchester United and had no urge to sign for Real Madrid, but was being edged into it by a pushy girlfriend.

Perhaps it was a more attractive alternative to reality.

Anyway, 31 year old Edurne is back in the story in Spain having done an interview with Halo! and her words have been taken by Real Madrid friendly press as a sure sign a Manchester United exit is on the cards.

Diario Gol report Edurne is house-hunting in Madrid, wanting a bigger place where she can settle down with De Gea and start a family. That all fits in with the idea of a summer transfer.

Ok Diario stick the boot into Manchester” ‘…because among the professional obligations of both and travelling, they barely have time to live together, and when they have it is in Manchester, a city with little life.”

Ouch. And inaccurate.

The Spanish media don’t need to down-talk Manchester to make De Gea wishing to sign for Real Madrid seem reasonable. The 26 year old would be signing for arguably the world’s biggest club, in a city he’s from, with a team right at the top of European football and who don’t struggle to qualify for the Champions League.

On top of that he gets to live with his long term girlfriend, start a family and dream about pushing little De Geas around Plaza de Santa Ana.

If De Gea leaves, it’s likely not about Manchester and Manchester United, but more about him and his future on and off the pitch. And that’s understandable.
