Manchester City signed Sergio Gómez from Anderlecht in the summer, after failing in their efforts to secure Marc Cucurella’s services.
Pep Guardiola has continued to rely on João Cancelo for the left side of the defence this season.
Gómez has made one start for the Citizens and that came in their Champions League win over Sevilla, since Cancelo was moved to the right-back position following an injury to Kyle Walker.
His arrival at the Etihad would not stop Manchester City from looking at another player in the same position. According to Calciomercato.it, the English champions have ‘gathered information’ about Benfica’s Alejandro Grimaldo in recent months.
The 26-year-old’s current deal expires in 2023 but he continues to be a vital figure for the Portuguese club, starting 12 matches in all competitions this term.
It’s said Juventus have set their sights on him, while Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona and Inter Milan have gathered information about his situation. The Eagles could ‘consider his farewell’ in January in order to avoid him leaving as a free agent next summer.
Grimaldo could be a perfect heir to Alex Sandro at the Turin club. They are thinking about him and the ‘Spaniard is waiting’, likely to join Juve or another club.
If Manchester City are keen to sign Grimaldo, it needs to be seen whether they will make an approach for him in January or convince him to stay at Benfica until the end of the season.
