France Football have a Monday morning article claiming Marseille have contacted Wilfried Bony. The French club have been linked with a string of strikers, and perhaps it was fitting that Bony was on the list at some point.
Spending last season on loan at Stoke City, Bony wasn’t able to show enough to attract a line of clubs knocking down Manchester City’s door, and the attraction for Marseille seems to be that the player is cheap.
France Football say Bony is ‘cheaper than Giroud and Bacca’, other options for Marseille this summer, but he doesn’t seem quite as exciting. Even the salary would be cheaper, so if Marseille are looking for a value deal, if value is only judged on lower price, then Bony could be their man.
Manchester City expect a transfer fee of around €15m to complete a deal, which isn’t too heavy for Marseille, but if France Football can’t get excited then it’s not going to be bright news for Marseille fans.
The club are supposed to be signing a big name striker this summer, and Wilfried Bony won’t match those expectations. Nevertheless, Marseille signed Bafetimbi Gomis on loan last summer and not a lot was expected of him, but he certainly delivered.
