Following the backtracking of all English clubs from the Super League, the project headed by Florentino Pérez is all but dead.
It’s been announced that it will be suspended for the time being, and all clubs who have decided to pull out, such as Chelsea and Manchester City, will be welcomed back by UEFA.
One man who isn’t happy about all this is Josep Pedrerol, presenter of the very loud TV show El Chiringuito, who was also the platform on which Pérez made his rather ridiculous sales pitch Monday night.
It’s no secret the two get on, so the collapse of the Super League hasn’t gone down well, and nor has the news that UEFA will ‘relax FFP rules’.
On his Wednesday show, Pedrerol launched a rather amusing attack on the owners of Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, where El Chiringuito listed the fortunes of Sheikh Mansour (€17bn), Roman Abramovich (€13bn) and Hamad Al-Thani (€2bn), claiming they are the ones who ‘stand to gain’ from all this.
Not only that, but the entire bit ends with him sarcastically saying ‘Humble’ when referring to the owners.
It’s clear things aren’t being digested well in certain areas of the Pérez surroundings, and yes, Chelsea and Manchester City are owned by rich people, with things needing to change at the top, but it’s not exactly like Real Madrid, or Barcelona, are poor clubs.
In debt, yes, but a lot of that will come through certain decisions at the top, especially on the transfer market.
Either way, that’s the mood in Spain at the moment, all because the Super League didn’t take off, UEFA made some changes and some clubs are owned by wealthy men.
