Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo have taken time out to pretty much dismiss any chance Manchester City have of signing Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer.
Following links in the English media, Mundo Deportivo have explained why the transfer simply won’t be happening. First of all, Ter Stegen was Pep Guardiola’s first choice last summer, and Barcelona held firm.
At that point, Manchester City were told to meet the German’s €80m buyout clause if they wanted to do a deal. Instead, Guardiola was able to get Claudio Bravo to move to England, but that transfer has largely been a disaster.
To now return for Ter Stegen isn’t realistic, as far as the Catalan newspaper is concerned. Last summer there were question marks over the goalkeeper’s future, but that was because he was annoyed at sharing the Barcelona position with Bravo.
Guardiola signing the Chilean has therefore decreased Manchester City’s chances of getting Ter Stegen, who is now said to be very happy with his role at Barcelona and not considering an exit.
