Diego Martinez has been linked with replacing Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United for months.
There’s never been any serious suggestion the Whites will dispense with their manager, with the idea instead being that Martinez fancies the job and is looking more long term.
In April it was reported in Spain that Martinez, who was then in charge at Granada, was being considered by Leeds in the event Bielsa didn’t renew his contract at Elland Road.
Described as an ‘old acquaintance’ of Victor Orta, the coach was presented as being the man under consideration should Bielsa decide to walk away from his English adventure.
He stayed, and then Martinez and Granada parted ways at the end of the manager’s contract in May. Without a job since, Estadio Deportivo say he’s rejected Levante and Getafe already.
In November it was reported he’d have rejected Villarreal too, because he’s waiting for Leeds United. Martinez has spent time in England whilst out of work, and it was explained he’d been perfecting his English skills.
Now there’s another club he may have to snub, with SuperDeporte saying he’s the first option for Elche.
At this point, Martinez may want some signals from Leeds United and Orta, if he’s to continue rejecting other clubs.
