Although it’s been a couple of days since Wolverhampton Wanderers confirmed the signing of Matheus Nunes from Sporting, there are a few reasons the Portuguese media is today full of stories about the player.
One of them is the Lions admitting the transfer was needed due to their financial situation, making it clear that they’d rather have kept the player.
“Sporting said goodbye this week to Matheus Nunes. (…) A painful sale from the sporting point of view, but indispensable for the sustainability of the club,” stated the Lisbon side (via O Jogo).
Other outlets such as A Bola show some regret regarding the sale, pointing out that the midfielder had been of huge importance to the team, but Wolves’ bid was something they couldn’t say no to.
Last week, when Nunes had already turned down Wolves and also rejected West Ham United, the coach conveyed how proud that made him.
He even spoke at a press conference claiming these are different times, as footballers used to want to leave the Lions and were now choosing to stay.
Well, it didn’t take long for Nunes to change his mind and end up taking the Molineux offer. And that attitude, according to Correio da Manhã, hurt the manager’s feelings.
