Surpassing expectations when called upon by Frank Lampard during the second half of last season, Olivier Giroud made a good case for himself to be someone Chelsea could lean on this campaign.
However, always looking to the future, the Blues decided to sign Timo Werner, adding further competition for the Frenchman, who has played very little.
Despite this, Didier Deschamps has still called him up to the national team, putting his faith in a player who has rarely let him down, and yet there’s only so many times he can do so when Giroud is barely featuring at club level.
That’s why it wasn’t surprising to first see stories of a possible Inter interest in January surfacing, and it isn’t a shock to hear the France manager suggesting his striker needs to get away from Stamford Bridge if he is to remain in his plans.

"Olivier Giroud le sait, la situation qu’il vit aujourd’hui ne peut pas s’éterniser. Pour mars, il faudra qu’il trouve une solution autre que celle-là." @PhilSANFOURCHE @M6Groupe pic.twitter.com/MzNA9O8ip3 — RTLSport (@RTLFoot) November 16, 2020
Speaking to RTL France, he said: “Olivier Giroud knows it. The situation he’s in today cannot last continue. When it comes to March, he’ll need a different solution to the one he has now”.
Basically, find a new club or you might not be picked for the Euros.
Following the disappointment of the 2016 edition of the competition and the high of the 2018 World Cup victory, Giroud was eyeing the upcoming tournament as a final hurrah, so that’s certainly something he’ll be thinking about in the next month and a half ahead of the January transfer window.
