Colombia boss Néstor Lorenzo has stepped to defend Liverpool’s Luis Díaz, insisting the Liverpool star is now doing what most ask of him with the national side.
Red Mas cover comments from the Colombia manager today from his press conference on Monday in which he moved to defend the Liverpool star from criticism.
Díaz has often found himself the focal point for criticism with the national team, with many believing he doesn’t do enough given the player he is.
They believe that the Colombian could do more, particularly given they regularly watch him shine in the Premier League for Liverpool. That has certainly been the case at the beginning of this season under Arne Slot, with Diaz boasting three goals and an assist in three games so far.
Indeed, his record of 41 goals and 19 assists in 125 games for Porto and 27 goals and 14 assists in 101 games for the Reds makes for impressive reading and leads to questions on the international stage.
Goals have been harder to come by for Colombia as he’s managed just 15 and three assists in 56 games, a total some believe should be much better.
Lorenzo doesn’t agree, though, and moved to defend the Liverpool man, who score in the 1-1 draw with Peru last week.
“The stars are always on everyone’s lips and are observed in a particular and more acute way,” he said.
“Three or four months ago the issue was why he didn’t score goals in the National Team and now he has become our top scorer in the qualifiers.
“We started to say, he is going to score goals, and he is scoring them. I am not worried, for me Luis is doing a good job, let’s let it flow because he does it well.”
