Andoni Iraola is set to depart Rayo Vallecano this summer, just months after turning down a potential move to Leeds United.
That’s according to Radio Marca, who say Iraola has rejected a renewal offer at the Spanish club and therefore ‘will not continue’ there beyond the end of the season.
The Spanish coach has communicated this to the club internally and will depart after three years there, where he has kept them in La Liga twice and took them to two cup semi-finals.
The decision to depart comes months after he rejected the chance to leave and join Leeds when they were hunting a replacement for Jesse Marsch.
At one point he appeared to be at the top of Leeds’ wish list to replace the American, but Iraola ultimately rejected the chance to make the move and he ended up remaining where he was, with the Whites eventually appointing Javi Gracia.
Of course, that move didn’t work out well for them and they ultimately ended up sacking the Spaniard in favour of Sam Allardyce for the last four games of the season instead.
Whether the Englishman remains beyond the end of the season is up for debate, with that decision likely dependent on whether they stay in the Premier League on Sunday.
Either way, perhaps they can be given their second shot at Iraola, the man they once wanted very much who will be a free agent this summer after all if they manage to somehow escape from the clasps of relegation on the final day of the campaign.
