Towards the end of the last window, Wolverhampton Wanderers were keen on signing Habib Diarra and even made a €25m bid that was turned down by RC Strasbourg.
This is relayed again by L’Equipe, who state the Ligue 1 side rejected bids from Wolves and RC Lens for the 19-year-old. The latter submitted three offers and their highest bid was €5m short of the one tabled by Wolves.
It’s said the midfielder was keen on leaving the club in the summer but Strasbourg president Marc Keller ‘refused to sell him’.
On Sunday, the France U21 international starred for his side by scoring the winner in their 1-0 win over FC Metz.
Strasbourg manager Patrick Vieira was not only delighted with the display but has also come out in public to show his support for Diarra.
“He had a complicated few months for the young player that he is, it was the first time he had to manage a transfer. It was important for me to show him confidence. He has all the support of the club,” Vieira explained.
“We made the right choice, with my staff, to put him back in line. Beyond his goal, he was good in other areas, especially defensively and working with others.”
Diarra now wants to put the summer disappointment behind him and focus on the season ahead with his current employer.
“It’s a relief, but I’m focused on the season, focused on helping the team. I turned the page,” he said.
Wolves haven’t forgotten about the teenager as Calciomercato reported earlier this month that they continue to follow Diarra.
