It’s now looking very likely that Gedson Fernandes will leave Tottenham Hotspur and return to Benfica in the January transfer window.

Following an unsuccessful loan spell at the London side so far, both clubs have now been commenting on the possibility of his return to Lisbon.

Last week, Spurs boss José Mourinho described the situation as ‘sad’, and opened doors for the midfielder’s move.

Now at the weekend, Benfica manager Jorge Jesus was asked about the possibility, and claimed he’ll be welcomed at the Estádio da Luz again.

“I don’t know Gedson very well. His two years were when I was out of Portugal,” said Jorge Jesus (via Mais Futebol).

“He was loaned to Tottenham, I don’t know why. I know he doesn’t play at Tottenham. If Benfica want him back and the player is interested in returning, I will welcome him with open arms.

“For him not to play at Tottenham and not to play at Benfica, he’d be better not playing at Benfica.”

Gedson joined Spurs on a one-year loan deal in the last winter window, and this season he’s only had the chance to play for 63 minutes in an EFL Cup match against Chelsea.

He isn’t even being picked for match-day squads, so cutting short the spell seems like the most reasonable decision for all parties involved. Tottenham had an option to buy him for €50m, and Benfica don’t even have to wait to know the answer now.
