PSV coach Phillip Cocu has told the Dutch media he doesn’t understand why Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was selected for the Netherlands last two games. Stekelenburg made his first start in four years for his country last Friday against Belarus, but has come in for flak for his role in the country’s defeat to France yesterday.

Speaking to ED.nl, Cocu questioned why Jeroen Zoet hasn’t been playing in the last two Netherlands internationals after being installed as Danny Blind’s No.1 in the games against Greece and Sweden last month. The former Barcelona star said in his opinion if you take the decision to make a goalkeeper your first choice then you can’t reverse this.

“You make a choice for a goalkeeper and in my view you must not move away from that choice. With Jeroen there is no reason for this to happen,” said the PSV coach.

Only yesterday we reported on comments Dutch legend Willem van Hanegem made in which he also questioned why Stekelenburg was being selected ahead of PSV’s Zoet. The 35-year old’s international career seemed to be over when he was playing for Southampton and Fulham, but his form for Everton has pushed him ahead of Zoet.
