Chelsea’s hunt for Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino today gets an update from the coach’s home country’s media.
Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo comes up on Twitter to say that the 51-year-old is ‘very close’ to becoming the Blues’ new boss.
It’s claimed that Chelsea and Pochettino are now discussing the ‘final details’ of the agreement.
The coach, however, isn’t taking charge now, as it’s said that even in case the deal goes through, he will only start working at the club at the start of the next season.
The reason for that is that when leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July last year, it had been agreed that he wouldn’t take a new job until June, meaning he needs to wait for a few more months until being officially appointed by Chelsea.
Following the sacking of Graham Potter, the Blues have put Frank Lampard in charge, and their situation means they aren’t in a hurry to have a new coach before the end of the season.
Therefore, this should be a situation that satisfies all parties, and gives Pochettino a bigger chance of planning his job there.
