As things stand, there are few, if any, better centre-back pairings in the Premier League than Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.
The two Belgian defenders, who play alongside each other for both club and country, were part of the best defence of last season, and are on course to recreate the achievement this time around, allowing only three goals in seven games.
One man who appears very grateful to have both of these men in his team is Roberto Martinez, who had lovely things to say about both, but picked out the former Atlético Madrid man in particular.
He said, relayed by DH: “Toby is a very elegant player, who is also quite technical. He never veers from his objective, which is to ensure no goal is conceded. He just hasn’t stopped progressing since he left Ajax and since his arrival in England. I’m extremely satisfied between his and Jan Vertonghen’s relationship.”
Also capable of putting the ball in the back of the opponent’s net on top of ensuring it doesn’t go past his goalkeeper, the 27-year-old has quickly gained notoriety as one of the best defenders in the league.
Alderweireld has played in all but one of his team’s games this season, missing out on the 5-0 win over Gillingham in the EFL Cup.
