Southampton allowed Mohamed Elyounoussi to join Celtic on a season-long loan deal in the summer.
The Norway international struggled in his first month at Celtic Park and was dropped from the national team squad for October’s international.
Last month, VG reported the winger’s decision to join Neil Lennon’s side on a temporary deal has ‘not been a great success’.
The 25-year-old has been successful in changing his fortunes as the former Basel man scored six goals and managed five assists since October’s international break.
Lars Lagerbäck included him in Norway’s squad for this month’s fixtures, but earlier this week, he admitted the Southampton owned player suffered a foot injury.
Lagerbäck has now provided additional updates while speaking in a press conference on Thursday.
“Unfortunately for both him and us, he has a feeling of an injury in the foot. So, the outcome is that he’s not going to play [against Faroe Islands]. He’s going to leave the squad today,” TV2 quoted Lagerbäck as saying.
The Norway manager’s comments could come as a blow for Celtic, but he doesn’t specify how long Elyounoussi will have to be away from the pitch.
The Scottish Premiership champions face Livingston after the last international break of this year.
