Former Rangers defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst has compared the Old Firm clash with Celtic to the De Klassieker and El Clasico.
Voetbal Primeur have reported on comments made by the Feyenoord manager in his press conference ahead of this weekends De Klasssiker: “It is special because it is a loaded game against the arch rival, and in my career, I have been able to play many derbies and classics, such as Barça – Real and Celtic – Rangers.
“Ajax – Feyenoord also belongs in that list. Certainly, it is so much more than just the three points, you notice that and then you understand and feel that this is a competition that is different from others.”
Van Bronkhorst spent three seasons at Rangers and was involved in a number of games against local rivals Celtic. During his time at Ibrox, Rangers were getting the better of Celtic and he won two league titles during his stay.
However, in recent years Celtic have had the upper hand over Rangers, winning the first Old Firm clash this season. Olivier Ntcham’s goal was enough to give Brendan Rodgers’ all three points last month but Steven Gerrard will be looking to put this right when the two clubs meet at Ibrox in December.
