English media claims, which look wholly unreliable, of Tottenham Hotspur interest in Nico Gaitain are still making their way around the Spanish media. The response is generally there’s not a chance, and a bemusement that the claim has even been floated in the first place.
The Spanish media love a transfer story, often if it’s true or not, but the claims that Mauricio Pochettino wants to loan Gaitan, and that there’s any chance of Tottenham completing the deal, have been treated with the written equivalent of quizzical looks.
AS in their Wednesday edition detail just a few reasons why Gaitan won’t be joining his compatriots Pochettino and Erik Lamela at Tottenham. Atletico Madrid’s squad is already short as it is, the club are banned from buying players, and Diego Simeone sees a real future for Gaitan.
It’s stated Simeone ‘cannot accept possibility’ of such a deal, and it’s very much dead in the water.
The supposed Tottenham target was one of Atletico best players last night in a disappointing 2-3 defeat to Las Palmas. After the match he explained that he’s happy with the club and expected a period to settle in anyway, as he had done at Benfica.
The idea of Gaitan being keen on moving to Tottenham in January on loan just doesn’t match with reality. Pochettino will be well aware of Atletico’s situation and therefore that he’s genuinely planning such a swoop is also hard to believe.
