Carney Chukwuemeka hasn’t had a prominent role at Chelsea since joining them from Aston Villa in August 2022.
Enzo Maresca didn’t consider the midfielder for the Premier League this season, and he left the Blues to join Borussia Dortmund on loan in the winter market.
The German club have secured a buying option with Chelsea and Sky Deutschland give an insight into plans for the 21-year-old.
Chukwuemeka initially struggled with a knee problem since moving to Germany and has made only three appearances.
The Chelsea man’s fitness isn’t yet at 100%, but he has ‘convinced’ the Bundesliga club. Dortmund manager Niko Kovač is also a ‘big fan’ of him. If it’s up to BVB, they will certainly retain the former Villans man beyond this season.
According to Sky, BVB will only be able to exercise the purchase option if they qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League next season. Otherwise, it would be ‘impossible’ for them to buy the Chelsea owned player.
Dortmund are 10th in the table, trailing fifth placed SC Freiburg by five points and six behind fourth placed 1. FSV Mainz 05. They are active in the Champions League and face Lille in the last 16.
