Netherlands manager Danny Blind has told the Dutch media he has an issue with Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg not playing for the Merseyside club. Stekelenburg has failed to win his place back from Joel Robles after the Dutchman picked up an injury in December.
Voetbal Premeiur have reported on comments Blind made when asked about his goalkeepers getting a lack of games at their clubs. The former Ajax star said PSV youngster Jeroen Zoet is the only one not struggling to get playing time.
Blind highlighted that Robles has done well for Everton since coming into the team, and subsequently Stekelenburg has failed to win his place back in Ronald Koeman’s side.
“With the goalkeepers I have a problem, of course. Vorm plays really good but plays only FA Cup. Cillessen plays only in the Copa del Rey and the replacement of Stekelenburg has performed well since his injury.
“I do not contact them all individually. Frans Hoek (goalkeeping coach) has the most contact with them. He explains the state of affairs to me every Tuesday. He speaks to them every week.”
Stekelenburg was injured during Everton’s clash with Liverpool just before Christmas, which ruled him out for three Premier League games. However, since his return the Netherlands international has been on the bench due to the form of Robles.
Last October Stekelenburg was brought back into the national set-up, and the Everton keeper is likely to be concerned about his lack of games given Blind’s policy that you must be playing regularly for your club to get selected.
