I know this may not come as a shock, Manchester United fans, but it seems your club might have been used again by an agent to get his client a new contract.
Over the past few days, reports emerged that Real Madrid had rejected an €85m offer (from Manchester United, according to Sport) for the Colombian attacking midfielder, which was also confirmed by the player himself.
Real Madrid and Florentino Pérez see James Rodriguez as a great marketing tool for sponsors, and losing him could be bad for business.
Sport state the rebuttal didn’t exactly go down well with Mendes, even if his client says he’s ready to fight for a spot at Real Madrid, and if the La Liga giants continue to say no to an exit, then the player should be getting a new contract.
Currently in the same wage bracket as the likes of Pepe, Raphaël Varane or Luka Modric, Rodriguez could start asking to be put near Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale in terms of salary, who both earn around €10m/year.
As always, it’s worth noting that reports from the Catalan press regarding Real Madrid are to be taken with a pinch of salt, but considering the history of agents using Manchester United to get improved contracts, this wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest.
