Among the many names who’ve been linked to the Manchester United job since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has been one of the lesser mentioned ones.
The Portuguese coach, who won the league title with the Lions this year, was said to be one of the options the Red Devils have on the table.
Now as Amorim spoke to the media ahead of Sporting’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, he was asked about the possibility. And as his club soon face Ajax in the competition, he made sure to hint about another candidate for the Manchester United job.
“We’re talking rumours, my future is clear. I don’t know how many names have been mentioned, I don’t care much. If you allow me the opinion, Man United should take Ten Hag this week. It is something I would be very happy about,” said Amorim (via Jornal de Notícias).
On Tuesday morning, Portuguese newspaper Record featured an article ruling out Amorim’s move to Old Trafford.
They claimed that his departure from Sporting is now ‘out of the radar’, as he’s been willing to extend his contract with the club one more time.
They also point out that he’s protected by a release clause worth €30m. Manchester United is likely too soon for Amorim right now, but he could be an option in the future.
As for Erik ten Hag, he said in his press conference that there’s been no contact, although he’s pleased to be linked.
