As well as centre-back, Manchester United need players down the wing and up front.
They have Marcus Rashford, Marcus Greenwood, Odion Ighalo and Anthony Martial all capable of playing in the position, but with the first two acting more as wingers for the time being and the Nigerian on loan, an extra body will be needed.
That’s why we’ve seen rumours here and there about players being looked at by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his scouting team, with one of them being Valencia’s Maxi Gómez.
The La Liga club are currently in something of a desperate financial situation, which has led to them selling Rodrigo to Leeds United, and their plan is to get some more in the bank too.
Kevin Gameiro is another one they’re looking at getting rid of, as he’d cost them €11.5m over the next year, but their ideal scenario would be to keep Gómez around.
However, that isn’t stopping clubs from getting in contact about the Uruguay international, with Cadena SER reporting that Barcelona are interested and have got in touch with his entourage as they look to move on from Luis Suárez.
Unfortunately for anyone keen on Gómez, he has a contract at Mestalla until 2023 with a release clause of €140m.
That being said, Valencia wouldn’t expect teams to match that, but would want to get a ‘minimum of €60m’ for the striker.
That’s when they add that as well as Barcelona, various Premier League clubs are circling around, including Manchester United.
They reported it in January, and it appears the Red Devils haven’t gone anywhere.
One to keep an eye on, although it doesn’t look very advanced for now.
