Like many other Manchester United players, Juan Mata’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, allowing him to speak to clubs outside of England from January 1st onwards.
Unlike players like David De Gea and Matteo Darmian, however, the Red Devils don’t have an option to extend the Spaniard’s contract by an extra year, having already done so last January to keep him around for the current campaign.
With this in mind, if the player refuses to stay beyond this season at Old Trafford, he will leave on a free, and he’s already got a destination in mind.
According to France Football, the 30-year-old is ‘waiting for Valencia’, the club where he first made a name for himself in Europe alongside the likes of David Silva and David Villa prior to his move to Chelsea.
They explain the midfielder ‘would like to return’ to La Liga, and where better to do so than his former club after all these years.
So far, it seems nothing’s happened, and it’s up to Manchester United and José Mourinho to be convincing enough if they want to keep him around.
