Earlier this week, Manchester United’s Anthony Martial gave an interview to Diario de Sevilla, where he explained his decision to move to Sevilla.
In the process, he made it clear he had turned down both Juventus and Barcelona, deciding that teaming up with Julien Lopetegui was the best move for his career.
Whether this was the right move remains to be seen, since his first performance away from Manchester United wasn’t exactly a success, but it’s the one he wanted.
This has been backed up by Carlos Perez, an intermediary who orchestrated the move with the player’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, who spoke to TuttoMercatoWeb on Thursday.
He said: “As Martial said himself, he wanted to move to Sevilla from the beginning. He was totally convinced that he was going to play under the orders of Mr Lopetegui. Let’s not forget that this is a World Cup year, and the top players who are not finding a lot of space in their respective teams have therefore sought it elsewhere.
“Sevilla, as the results of recent years show, is undoubtedly an ideal solution. In any case, this question should be asked more to Anthony’s agent, who always seeks the best for his clients.”
Prior to deciding that he wanted to leave Old Trafford for more minutes elsewhere, Martial had made 269 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 79 goals and assisting another 50.
That, however, doesn’t quite show how little he was being used this year, as both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick only used him 11 times since the start of the campaign, during which he scored just one goal.
