Since the summer of 2020, when Edinson Cavani’s contract with Paris Saint Germain was about to expire, the striker has been linked to a few South American clubs.
More recently, we’ve seen stories from Brazil claiming Palmeiras are interested in signing the player next year. The club are expected to have a bigger budget for salaries, and since the striker’s deal with Manchester United ends in the summer, they could get him for free.
However, it’s been a few weeks since those rumours about the Verdão cooled down, and today, we see a journalist pointing out that they’re actually right in not going for Cavani’s signing.
Live on UOL, Danilo Lavieri, who often breaks transfer stories, points out a couple of reasons why Palmeiras shouldn’t make such a big effort to sign the Old Trafford star from Manchester United.
“He [Cavani] has been throwing himself to the South American teams for some time, especially the Brazilian ones, but he’s had problems with injuries, he’s not playing very often and the cost is around six million reais a month, which is absurd,” said Lavieri.
“We saw several examples of other heavy players who came and didn’t work out, Daniel Alves is the most symbolic of them. There are some exceptions, like Hulk, for example.”
“I think that the board of Palmeiras is acting very correctly in leaving out names like Cavani, Diego Costa, Marcelo. It’s true that Hulk knocked on the door, but Palmeiras chose not to sign him because they were in the middle of a dispute title and could lose the locker room. It’s time for the fans to give more credit to the board of directors of Palmeiras, to Anderson Barros. The team won two Libertadores in one year and kept the boys who were promoted, who in other teams would have already been sold.”
The funny thing is that at the same time Palmeiras seem to give up on the transfer, their biggest rivals Corinthians now seem to want Cavani.
Reports from Brazil have been claiming the Timão are in touch with the entourage of the Manchester United player, although we’ll have to wait and see if they actually get anything done.
