Around once a week, an Italian newspaper will publish an article on Alexis Sanchez’s chances of staying at Inter Milan beyond the end of the current season.
Sent away by Manchester United in the summer window, Sanchez has been seriously held back by injury issues and hasn’t been able to show Inter that he’s worth keeping around beyond the summer.
Tuttosport report that Dries Mertens being on the verge of renewing with Napoli changes the situation. Inter had been keen on the Belgian, so now they have another space for an attacking target in the next window.
Sanchez can take that space, but there’s a couple of important conditions.
First, he must show good form between now and the end of the season, including finding the back of the net a few times.
Then Inter would consider paying the €20-25m it’s believed Manchester United would want.
On top of that, Sanchez needs to seriously drop his wage demands.
He’d have to take a cut of ‘at least half’, and likely more, in order to be a realistic permanent signing for Inter.
