While Lorenzo Insigne has been very vocal about where he wants his future to unfold (Napoli for life), Dries Mertens has been a bit quieter.

Having a truly remarkable season under Maurizio Sarri, mostly playing as a false nine, the Belgian forward’s contract comes to an end in 2018, and this summer could be decisive.

The Belgian media seem to think smaller Premier League clubs are all he can hope for, yet Gazzetta dello Sport are convinced Manchester United will be in the race for his services once the season comes to an end.

They mentioned it last week, and bring José Mourinho’s side into the mix once again on Wednesday as they give a move to Old Trafford a 30% chance of happening.

While that might seem slim considering how attractive a transfer to United is on paper, considering the alternatives, it’s actually quite good.

Inter Milan are given poorer odds, at 20%, while a move to China is a third less likely, at 10%.

The most likely option, according to Gazzetta is a stay at Napoli (40%), yet that is only likely to happen if the Serie A club meet his contractual demands, which we’ve previously covered.

With a desire to see his team find the back of the net more often, José Mourinho adding a player who has scored 20 goals in 26 league appearances this season certainly makes sense, yet, considering where he plays and the skills he brings, you’d expect him to solely be an Antoine Griezmann alternative.
