No one seems to really want William Carvalho, but O Jogo has a big warning on Wednesday anyway: all the clubs who plan to pay the player’s release clause will have to do it in eight days.
That’s because his release clause can be only activated until June 30th. This is the deadline for clubs to buy him for €45m. After that, all the negotiations must be made directly with Sporting, as the Portuguese club will have no upper limit on asking price.
Just like in any other William Carvalho article, the Portuguese newspaper links him to a move to England. Rio Ferdinand’s recent comments on the midfielder are enough for Manchester United’s name to be mentioned, just like José Mourinho’s appointment at the club.
O Jogo also remembers that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City were also linked to the player in the past, but there are no updates about approaches or negotiations for the player right now.
The likely truth is that the end of the clause will only help any interested clubs. William is a good player, but this price is a bit out of reality. The expiration will stop Sporting from relying on the contract, and if the bids arrive to the club, they won’t have many arguments to base his price so highly any longer.
They’ll try, of course, but the Carvalho trail seems to have gone cold.
